About CB Diocese

The Malankara Mar Thoma Syrian Church traditionally believed to have been founded in the year AD 52 by Saint Thomas (Mar Thoma), one of the 12 disciples of Jesus Christ, and known by the name of the Apostle, defines itself as “Apostolic in origin, Universal in nature, Biblical in faith, Evangelical in principle, Ecumenical in outlook, Oriental in worship, Democratic in function, and Episcopal in character.” With its headquarters at Thiruvalla in Kerala, the church has thirteen Dioceses with believers across the globe. The Chennai - Bangalore Diocese one among the thirteen dioceses of the Mar Thoma Syrian Church of Malabar, also known as a missionary diocese is spread over the four states of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana as well as the Union Territories of Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Pondicherry. It also includes Abu Dhabi and Al-Ain in parishes (till Dec 31st, 2016) and Kuwait St. Thomas Mar Thoma Church and Kuwait St. James Mar Thoma Church (from Jan 1st, 2017). Our diocese is divided into ten centres and has seventy three parishes, fifty four chapels, sixty seven congregations and forty three mission centres. The mission fields constitute half
of the parishes in this diocese.

God Almighty has blessed us with a fruitful year of activity. We received good support from the
parishioners and well-wishers for the successful implementation of our programs. Let us praise God
for all the blessings that we received as a diocese. We remember the continuous and encouraging
support of our dear Tirumeni Rt. Rev. Dr. Mathews Mar Makarios Episcopa. We do acknowledge the
support of the Diocesan Council members for the term 2014 - 17, the clergy, the evangelists and the
laity for the blessed functioning of the diocese. The Diocesan Council was very helpful in executing
the programs of the diocese. With a heart full of gratitude to the Lord Almighty and appreciation to all
the members in the Chennai - Bangalore Diocese for their valuable prayers and contributions.

The Diocesan Council for 2016 - 2017 met four times in the reporting year to make and implement the
following decisions:
• Decided to give a 1/3rd portion of the total expenditure to the Jerusalem Mar Thoma Syrian
Church, Anna Nagar for the CMDA regularisation (Rs. 720298/-). To get CMDA regularization
for Dr. Joseph Mar Thoma Centre for Holistic Development.
• Decided to admit 15 more students at Mydukur Hostel.
• Decided to purchase a school bus for the Mydukur School.
• Decided to conduct a retreat for the student chaplains of the diocese.
• Decided to make necessary arrangements for the diocesan assembly.
• Decided to conduct Annual Missionary and Evagelists Conference at Beerasandra from 16th to
18th August 2016.
• Decide to celebrate the Birth Centenary of the Valiya Metropolitan at Bangalore.
• Necessary arrangements were made for the Centre Conventions Bangalore (Jan 19-22, 2017),
Chennai (Jan 13-15, 2017) and Hyderabad (Nov 10-13, 2016), the theme was “Life in its
Fullness” St. John 10: 10
• The Council approved the plan and estimate of the Mydukur School.
• Decide to settle the bank loan taken for a school bus for the Kurvakalam School.
• Decide to publish a diocesan directory.
• Decide to conduct the Annual Diocesan clergy conference from 2017, from January 24th to 26th
at Beerasandra.
• Decide to organize a meeting Justice and Peace Commission at Dr. Joseph Mar Thoma Holistic
Centre, Anna Nagar, Chennai, on December 10, 2016.
• Decide to open a bank account for the Yeraguntala Mission.
• Decided to continue the Medical insurance scheme for the diocesan evangelists and the MTEA
evangelists who are serving in this diocese.
• Decided to find out the possibilities to start Railway Porters’ Ministry at Chennai and
• The plan and estimate of the Yeraguntal Chapel and the Mission House were approved.
